Dongfeng Motor and Cummins announced in Beijing last week that the two sides have begun to cooperate in the development of a new generation of 13-liter heavy-duty truck engines. The two parties jointly stated that the goal of launching the project is to target the high-end market of heavy trucks in China, and also to meet the needs of the international market.

According to reports, the development of this new heavy-duty truck engine has completely revolutionized the traditional technology and product introduction model of Sino-foreign joint ventures. The project will be funded by Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., a peer-to-peer joint venture between Cummins and Dongfeng Motor. The East Asia R&D Center conducts research and development and is supported by Cummins' global R&D network.
Zhu Fushou, general manager of Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd. said that Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. will have all the independent intellectual property rights of the 13-liter new engine platform. The 13-litre fully-electrically controlled heavy-duty diesel engine jointly developed by the two parties is expected to be put into operation in 2009. The power range covers 400~545 horsepower, and the product will be used for heavy trucks with a total weight of more than 40 tons.
It is understood that the 13-liter engine project will take advantage of Cummins' leading engine technology in the industry, starting with the need to meet the needs of both China and the international market. The 13-liter engine is designed to meet both the Euro III and Euro IV standards of the world's two core emission regulations, the European regulations, and the US Federal Environmental Protection Agency's EPA 2007 standard. Not only that, but the new heavy-duty engine platform also has the ability to further upgrade to the Euro V standard and the US EPA 2010 regulations.
