Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. recently announced a new technology that can extract the silica raw materials needed to make tires from the ash that is used to generate electricity and incinerate rice husks, helping Goodyear produce eco - friendly tires .
According to the statistics of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the world harvests more than 700 million tons of rice each year, and rice husks are usually burned for power generation. In the past two years, the Goodyear Innovation Technology Center has been researching and testing the technology of extracting silica from rice husk ash, which will greatly reduce the waste transported to landfills and thus have a positive impact on the environment.
Joseph Zekoski, temporary interim chief technology officer at Goodyear, said: "The use of rice husk ash will be a new way for Goodyear to acquire silica and help reduce the husk ash contamination in landfills. This is reflected in Goodyear's performance. Constant innovation and commitment to environmental protection."
“The focus of Goodyear's innovation work is to make tires greener from raw materials and manufacturing processes. We are constantly exploring ways to improve fuel efficiency, through innovations such as tire pressure control (AMT), to help consumers keep tires running optimally. Performance, and we also use renewable resources such as soybean oil to replace traditional petroleum products. These innovations not only help us increase productivity and efficiency, benefit the environment, but also benefit consumers.†Zekoski added.
Combining silica with rubber to make a tire tread can increase the strength of the rubber, help reduce rolling resistance, and improve fuel efficiency. At the same time, silica can effectively improve the wet grip performance of tires.
