Novelis has announced that the United States, in order to meet the automotive industry for aluminum sheet material growing demand, the company intends to immediately begin expansion in the German automotive aluminum factory.
In Europe, Novelis has already started production of automotive aluminum panels at the Nachterstedt plant in Germany and the Sierre plant in Switzerland. Today, the company's Gottingen plant in Germany will also start production of automotive aluminum panels. The production capacity will also be expanded in two steps.
According to the expansion plan of Novelis, the initial aluminum sheet production capacity of the Goettingen plant will reach 20,000 tons/year. After the completion of the second phase expansion, the plant's production capacity will double to 40,000 tons/year.
According to Erwin Mayr, Senior Vice President of Novelis and president of Nobelius Europe, “Enlarging the production capacity of the Goettingen plant is part of our global automotive industry expansion plan. As the world’s largest automotive aluminum sheet manufacturer, Novelis Expansion is being carried out globally to meet the rapid growth of automakers' demand for rolled aluminum materials."
Novelis is currently building its first automotive aluminum sheet production plant in China in Changzhou. The first phase of the project will have an investment of US$98 million. The plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2014 and the production capacity will reach 120,000 tons/year.
