Recently, Wärtsilä announced that the new Wärtsilä 31DF engine will play an important role in an LNG power dry bulk carrier project.

The project was launched in May 2015 and is led by the Greek ship owner Arista Shipping Company. The ship design company Deltamarin, the LNG enclosure specialist GTT, and the American Bureau of Shipping are all involved. The project aims to develop a commercially viable LNG powered dry bulk carrier design that complies with IMO's 2025 Energy Efficiency Design Index (Phase 3) and related pollution discharge requirements.
It is reported that the usual choice for dry bulk carriers is to use a two-stroke engine. Wärtsilä's "efficient" 31-stroke engine has achieved the Guinness World Record for the most efficient four-stroke machine, making it an ideal choice for the project.
