From July 1st, China's new version of the "Sanitation Standard for Drinking Water" was officially launched. The drinking water quality index in the new standard has been increased from 35 in the original standard to 106, focusing on the control of microorganisms, heavy metals and organic pollutants. Meng Guangyu, Deputy Secretary-General of China Membrane Industry Association, said in an interview with reporters that ensuring the safety of drinking water is inseparable from the widespread application of membrane technology . However, the large-scale application of membrane technology requires further innovation to improve the quality and cost of membrane products through technological innovation. .

According to Meng Guangkai, membrane technology has been widely used as a new separation technology for gas separation, material separation, and water treatment, and in the field of water treatment, the demand for membrane products is the largest. New national standards for drinking water have proposed new control indicators for microorganisms, heavy metals, and organic pollutants. Currently, the methods of flocculation, sedimentation, and chemical disinfection used in water plants can only be applied to the case of using raw water as raw water. The influence of heavy metals, organic pollutants, high salinity, high hardness, toxins and some pathogenic microorganisms must rely on ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membrane technology. At present, the proportion of tap water plants using membrane technology in China is less than 1%. The implementation of the new edition of "Standards for Drinking Water Hygiene" opened up a broader market for membrane technology and played a positive role in the promotion and application of membrane technology. In addition, the application of membrane technology to reduce water pollution is the only way to fundamentally solve drinking water safety.

The reporter learned that raising drinking water safety standards is only one aspect of ensuring water security. China’s per capita possession of water resources is only 1/4 of the world’s average and it ranks 109th in the world. The severe water shortage has already formed a constraint on China’s economic development. Meng Guangshao said that in the past 10 years, the amount of recycled water in China has greatly increased. On the one hand, as the Chinese government has increased its efforts in the treatment of waste water, it has increased the requirements for the prevention and control of water pollution from the external environment; on the other hand, the shortage of water resources has become a bottleneck in the new expansion project of chemical companies, and increased the regeneration of industrial waste water. The efforts to achieve water recycling and zero emissions have also become the company's internal needs. Increasing the utilization rate of recycled water will become an inevitable choice for the sustainable development of China's chemical industry and even the entire national economy. Membrane technology has become an important support for increasing the amount of recycled water.

In addition to industrial reclaimed water, China has also stepped up the construction of civil reclaimed water facilities. On April 19 this year, the General Office of the State Council officially forwarded the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan for the Construction of National Urban Wastewater Treatment and Recycling Facilities", proposing that during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, investment in the construction of urban sewage treatment and recycling facilities nationwide will be nearly 4300. Billion yuan, including 34 billion yuan in investment in the construction of reclaimed water use facilities, aims to increase the utilization rate of urban reclaimed water from the current 8.5% to more than 15% by the end of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan."

Meng Guangyi also pointed out that there are two major bottlenecks in the promotion and application of membrane technology in the field of water treatment: First, equipment investment and operating costs are high. Taking drinking water as an example, the cost of drinking water treated with membrane technology will increase by 15% to 30%; It is the decision-making agency that does not trust the national brand film products enough. To solve the problem of high costs, the most important thing is to adopt technological innovations. For example, the use of composite thermal-induced phase separation membrane technology for the preparation of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) capillary membrane, change the membrane method through technological innovation to reduce the membrane cost, the use of components to increase the gas explosion device, gas extraction internal circulation and gravity filtration Technology significantly reduces operating costs. In addition, product localization is also an important way to reduce costs.

In fact, technological innovation and technological advancement are a long-term process. From the research and development of original technologies to the production of products, to market applications, to customer feedback, and to technical corrections, this process takes at least 3 to 5 years. “If China’s membrane technology is to gain trust in the water treatment market, it will also require market testing and tempering. However, advanced membrane technologies related to water regeneration and drinking water safety will surely be born in China because the largest market for these technologies is China," Meng Guangfu said optimistically.
