Recently, researchers at MIT developed a technology that makes use of scrap automotive batteries to make solar cells, which not only avoids waste pollution but also reduces the cost of solar cells.
In particular, researchers at MIT figure out how to extract lead from used car batteries and use that to make a component of a solar cell. The solar cells thus fabricated are substantially comparable in energy efficiency to solar cells made using high purity commercial materials.
At present, solar energy researchers devote a great deal of energy to the use of perovskite to produce high-efficiency solar cells. But they found that most solar cells made from perovskites contain lead. As the lead mining will consume a lot of energy, but also emit toxic gases to the atmosphere, which is a small burden on the natural environment. As a result, researchers at MIT are starting to look for sources of lead that do not need to develop new mines, and used car batteries are a perfect source, especially considering that recycled lead does not perform as badly as newly mined lead.
Angela Belcher, a professor of bioengineering and materials science engineering at MIT, said she and her colleagues found a simple way to extract lead from used batteries by simply turning on the car's battery and scraping it off the battery's electrodes Solar battery.
