TSMC, the world’s largest foundry, announced on the 28th that it will open a thin-film solar cell plant in September.

Cai Lixing, president of TSMC's new business development department, said that the new plant will focus on the development of CIGS thin-film solar modules. This was another big move after purchasing the Taiwan's largest solar energy maker, Motech Industries, and MooDi's 20% stake in January. In 2007, Moody's was the world's sixth-largest manufacturer of solar cells.

At the opening ceremony of the Green Jobs Job Fair, Cai Lixing said that the new factory will be located in the LED R&D center of Hsinchu TSMC and will officially start construction next month.

In fact, the factory's civil construction started in March this year, and it is expected that mass production will be introduced in 2011.

This year, TSMC took a series of actions to actively enter the solar field. It has not only been the largest shareholder of Taiwan Motech, but also acquired 21% of US-based photovoltaic company Stion in July to obtain thin-film solar cell manufacturing technology.

In addition, TSMC’s rival UMC went ahead of TSMC in the thin-film solar field because UMC created its own thin film solar company, Nex Power, as early as 2005, and it has entered volume production.

TSMC believes that it has years of experience in developing semiconductors and can accelerate the development of the green energy industry. Because Tsai worked as CEO of TSMC from 2005 to 2009.

Cai added that TSMC will add at least 500 jobs to develop its green energy business within the next 12 months.

In addition, Sino American Products, the largest wafer manufacturer for solar cells in Taiwan, is also in the job fair and said it will increase 2400-6000 jobs within the next five years.

Sino American President Luo Mingyi said that the company’s consolidated revenues increased by 80% from January to June this year compared with the same period last year, and it is expected that the revenue in 2010 may exceed NT$21 billion, and it is predicted that the company’s revenue will be in 2015. Up to 600-650 million Taiwan dollars.
